$1.1 Million HyperSpike Order for Bird Deterrence Announced by Ultra Electronics USSI PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 09 August 2011 11:17

Columbia City, IN, August 8, 2011 – Ultra Electronics USSI, manufacturer of the innovative HyperSpike long range, acoustic hailing devices (AHD), announced today it has received a second order, over $1.1 million, for multiple UL/ETL certified HyperSpike systems that will be installed at an international industrial site this year. The HyperSpike devices, integrated with an Accipiter®/Birdavert™ radar-activated bird deterrent system, are activated when birds attempt to enter an area that is potentially hazardous.

"HyperSpike AHD’s have proven to be highly effective in deterring birds around industrial sites,” remarked Thomas Link, V.P. Audio Products, Ultra Electronics USSI. "Wildlife protection and deterrence is a growing concern among industries such as mining, gas processing and power facilities,” Link concluded.

Traditional methods of using the same audio noise can cause birds to habituate to a deterrent that is designed to keep them away from hazardous situations. When integrated with avian radar technology, HyperSpike AHD systems are activated when birds are detected. HyperSpike’s powerful and focused acoustic output transmits a wide variety of tones, predator and distress calls at a distance in excess of 1500 meters. The acoustic tones and bird calls can be tailored to the various species of wildlife to provide effective, non-habituating protection and deterrence.

Elsewhere, demand for HyperSpike acoustic hailing devices continues to grow as evidenced by Ultra’s strong international sales and market penetration to countries in Europe, Asia and North America. In the first half of the year, China, India, United Arab Emirates, Canada, and the United Kingdom have showcased the growing need for long range acoustic communication technologies.

Without forfeiting intelligibility and maintaining the most compact enclosure in its class, the HS-18 improvements have extended the communication range to over 3 kilometers (1.8 miles). Beating all other competitive devices on the market, the increase in sound pressure level will further enable security personnel to safely communicate at range, penetrate through high background noise and establish the intent of targets at safer distances.

The 20” diameter x 15” depth carbon fiber HS-18 acoustic hailing device has the smallest enclosure and surface area measurement in its class. Similar to the earlier HS-18 model, clear, intelligible commands and authoritative messages are broadcast to intended targets with an exceptional intelligibility rating of 0.96 out of 1.0 on the Speech Transmission Index (STI).

Like the original HS-18 model, the improved HS-18 is equipped with the Opti-Port™ equipment bay. Located in the center of the acoustic hailing device, the Opti-Port is the optimal enclosure for sensor equipment placement. With sensors inherently centered with the audio beam, no additional centering maintenance is required. Easily configured with an optional video camera or other mission-critical sensors, the HS-18’s Opti-Port gives security personnel additional time and valuable information to evaluate the potential threat.
